Having followed Consul General Goldberg and more than 100 members of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China, I am pleased to report that our return to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was a complete success.

On this trip, for example, we were witness to the direct results of our investment mission in 2006. The Vice Chairman of the region was pleased to report to me that more than five investments by AmCham South China members grew out of that mission. For any region, province, city or town to see a 10% rate of investment from a delegation is truly an impressive feat, and one which I would attribute to several important points.

Perhaps first and foremost, Guangxi simply makes sense. Our studies of the business environment in South China indicate that AmCham South China members, at minimum, will be investing upwards of USD 16 billion in the coming three years. Heavy reinvestment of profits in China¡ªeven in the middle of economic uncertainty such as we are seeing today in many other countries¡ªcombined with preferential policies in Guangxi evocative of the heyday of the Pearl River Delta¡¯s unprecedented development in the past decades, almost ensure future success and a future for Guangxi not unlike the PRD.

Additionally, our friends in Guangxi, whom we first met one and a half years ago, are now old friends, and have nearly all been promoted to the highest levels of influence. It is ¡°common sense¡± that people do business with others that they know. To say that every member of AmCham South China is an old friend of the leaders of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is not hyperbole, it is simply the truth. We have already seen the first fruits of this relationship, and I have no doubt we will continue to watch Guangxi¡¯s growth closely, for it will also be our growth.

") document.write("

") document.write("

Finally, I must say that none of this would have been possible without the ongoing and proactive support and leadership of our Consul General. I have never been witness to a stronger, more effective and more decisive relationship between a Consulate and a business community¡ªsomething that does not happen by accident.

As we approach the traditional American holiday of Thanksgiving, it is clearly evident that we have much to be thankful for.
